Karner, Julie. Roald Amundsen: The Conquest of the South Pole. Crabtree Publishing: 2007. ISBN: 9780778724322.
This non-fiction book is about Roald Amundsen's dream to explore the South Pole. Amundsen had always dreamed of going to the South Pole ever since her was young. He joined the Norweigian military at the age of 21. He was in a race with Robert Scott in 1910 to be the first one to the South Pole. At the same time, people were fighting to be the first to explore the Northwest passage. Roald made it to the South Pole before Scott. Scott finished soon after, but did not make it back alive. The Amundsen Gulf was named after him as well as the Amundsen Sea, Glacier and a crater on the moon. An observation and research center sits in the middle of the South Pole.
I would recommend this book to anyone in 5th-7th grade. The information is very useful but you would need to be able to get more specific if you were doing a high school research paper. The information is very accurate and the pictures and captions are very helpful. It would be useful to people interested in exploration of the world and arctic regions.
