Sugar Cane: a Caribbean Rapunzel

Storace, Patricia. Colon, Raul. Sugar Cane: a Caribbean Rapunzel. Hyperion Books for Children: 2007. ISBN: 9780786807918.

Sugar Cane: a Caribbean Rapunzel, is a non-fiction book about a women who is pregnant and craves sugar cane. Her husband then searches for sugar cane and finds some in an empty yard. When he comes back to take more, Madame Fate catches him and demands punishment. The punishment was that on his newborn daughter's first birthday, she would be taken away and placed in a tower. The babies name was Sugar Cane and her hair grew long while she was in the tower. The King hears Sugar Cane singing and falls in love with her, hoping to climb up the tower by her long hair that she let down. Madame Fate cuts off all her hair though, and leaves Sugar Cane stuck in the tower.

I really liked that this was a story of Rapunzel, but in a different culture. The pictures had tons of swirls that made it really accented. I would recommend this book to kids from the ages of 6 to 10.
