Lorbiecki, Marybeth. Jackie's Bat. Illustrated by Brian Pinkney. Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers: 2006. Ages 7 - 12.
My story is about a baseball team named the Brooklyn Dodgers. Their team has all white players until one day a black man came to play for the Dodgers. The other men didn't like him. Their bat boy's dad was the owner of the team. His dad said to stay away from Jackie. Until one day a kid gave the bat boy a bat and card to give to Jackie. The boy gave it to Jackie but no card. He lied about the gift, it was a bat. Then he was scared, then he gave him the card. Jackie made black history. The illustrations were very good, creative. This book was very informational and I would recommend it for other kids because it is about black history. I think ages seven to twelve would like it.
