George-Warren, Holly. Honky-Tonk Heroes and Hillbilly Angels : The Pioneers of Country and Western Music. Illustrated by Laura Levine. Houghton Mifflin: 2006. ISBN: 0-618-19100-3. Ages 7 and up.
Honky-Tonk Heroes and Hillbilly Angels is a book about country music and it's founders. I learned about many song writers and their struggles to become successful in this music. The author really keeps you interested. Some of these stars had a really rough time getting started in country music. For example, Loretta Lynn wrote "Don't Come Home a Drinkin'." She had four chidlren by the time she was eighteen. Now if that does not make things difficult, I don't know what will. The picture style of this book is really helpful to me because I have a hard time picturing what they look like. It describes them as the story does and is a little exagerated but still interesting. I loved this book. I would recommend this book to country music lovers and anyone who is thirsty to learn more about these singers and their success.
