Sweet Land of Liberty

Hopkinson, Deborah. Sweet Land of Liberty. Illustrated by Leonard Jenkins. Peachtree: 2007. ISBN:9781561453955. Ages: 8 - adult.

This story is about a boy named Oscar Chapman. His school raises $5 to decorate their classroom and he and his cousin get to pick it out. They pick a picture of Abraham Lincoln. The school board gets mad and expells him from school because they don't like how he tried to stop segregation. When Oscar grows up he helps to get Marian Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial at the feet of Lincoln. The art in this book is really good. It is kind of abstract art. Yes, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history. I think anybody from the age of eight to an adult would enjoy this book. My favorite part is when Oscar picks up the picture of Abraham Lincoln out of the wood box and hangs it up on the wall again.
