Penguins

Townsend, Emily Rose. Penguins. Pebble Books, 2004. ISBN 0736823573. $15.93. Ages 4-8.

This is a good book for second graders to read. It is a great book to read. What we learned today is that penguins eat krill and squid. We liked the part where the penguins were swimming. We don’t like the part about the king penguins because we don’t like the king penguins. We would change the king penguins into a baby chick because we don’t like king penguins. We recommend it for all ages.

When I Miss You

Cornelia, Spelman. When I Miss You. Illustrated by Kathy Parkinson. Albert Whitman Company, 2004. ISBN 0807589101. $15.95. Ages 4-8.

I like the whole book except when they say I miss you. I recommend that Steven reads it. It tells when someone misses another person. It teaches us when someone misses another because Steven is my best friend and I play with him at lunch. I read when they miss each other. I liked it because it’s fun. I would change miss you to love you. I learned that children would read it.

Hunwick's Egg

Fox, Mem. Hunwick’s Egg. Illustrated by Pamela Lofts. Harcourt Children’s Books, 2005. ISBN 0152163182. $16.00. Ages 4-8.

I like Hunwick’s Egg because he didn’t leave the egg- he cared for it! He kept it safe. I didn’t like when they kept repeating, “How come that egg won’t hatch?” I though he would have friends at the beginning. I would recommend this book to all the little kids who like bandicoots. I would change the part when he was in the desert all alone with nobody with him. And when they said “Poor Hunwick.” I like to care for things like my dog, cat, and my hamsters.

Guess Who Swoops

Gordon, Sharon. Guess Who Swoops. Benchmark Books, 2005. ISBN 076141553X. $21.36. Ages 4-8.

We like the book because it’s nonfiction. We like this book because you get to guess. The writer gives clues about the owl. We like this book because we like animals. We would change when the owl was going to eat the mouse to the mouse hiding somewhere. We wonder which owl it is. We think it is a bar owl. It hunts at night. We didn’t like when the owl was going to hunt the tiny mouse. We didn’t like where the owl lives. We didn’t like when the owl surprises the mouse. We would recommend this book to the first graders because they can learn about owls.

The Incredible Water Show

Frasier, Debra. The Incredible Water Show. Harcourt Children’s Book, 2004. ISBN 0152162879. $16.00. Ages 4-8.

I liked how the illustrator made the people talk in bubbles like in comic books. I also liked the book because it was about the water cycle. I liked the colors because they are colorful. Little kids could learn that the rain evaporates into the sky. I didn’t like how it was in a play. I would change the subject to reptiles. I learned that the same water that rains right now was the same water when dinosaurs were alive. I recommend this book for 7 and up because this book has some hard words.

The Life Cycle of an Earthworm

Kalman, Bobbie. The Life Cycle of an Earthworm. Crabtree Publishing, 2004. ISBN 0778706966. $6.95. Ages 9-12.

We liked the way they put in lots of facts in the book because they give lots of information. We liked the part where the babies get out of the cocoon. We liked the twelve foot long earthworm. We don’t like the pictures because they are disgusting. We don’t like the slimy skin because it is gross to touch. We liked the way they hatch. We recommend this book for all ages. We recommend this book for all kids who love earthworms. We recommend this book for earthworm experts.

Please Say Please!

Cuyler, Margery. Please Say Please! Scholastic Press, 2004. ISBN 0590292242. $15.95. Ages Baby-Preschool.

I liked when the pig got mud on the tablecloth because the penguin yelled at him. I did not like when the bucket went on the penguin’s head because it is not funny. I would change when the bucket dropped on her head to the bucket falling on the floor. I thought the book could be read by moms and dads because it is a good book to read.

Peedie

Dunrea, Olivier. Peedie. Houghton Mifflin, 2004. ISBN 0618356525. $9.95. Ages 4-8.

I liked that he lost his cap. I like that he has a red baseball cap. I like the end because he found his cap on the egg. I like that he has to turn the egg. I like that he does not finish his food. I didn’t like when he forgets things. I would change that he didn’t find the cap on the egg. Because I want to make it funnier…that his mom was wearing it! If a kid dropped this book a gosling might pick it up and read it too! I recommend that my mom read this because she would like the end.

Clown Fish

Lindeen, Carol K. Clown Fish. Capstone, 2004. ISBN 0736825983. $19.93. Ages 4-8.

I like when the clown fish swims under water. I don’t like when a clown fish is bigger than a person’s hand. I would change when the clown fish is compared to a person’s hand to comparing it to a person’s head. I would let a kindergartener read it because they can learn a lot of cool facts. I learned that clown fish lay red small eggs. I learned anemones sting and kill fish, but they don’t kill clown fish. I think this is cool.

BooBoo

Dunrea, Olivier. BooBoo. Houghton Mifflin, 2004. ISBN 0618356541. $9.95. Ages Baby-Preschool.

We like this because the illustrations are beautiful. We like the part when BooBoo burped and burped. We like the part when BooBoo swallowed the bubble. We like the part when BooBoo eats morning till night. What we don’t like is this… this book is little and the pages have small sentences. We don’t like the part when BooBoo visits the animals. We don’t like the part when BooBoo was eating. We don’t like the dedication because it said BooBoo. We would change the character into a swan. We would change the setting into a farm. We like this book for all little children.

Frogs!

Gibbons, Gail. Frogs! Holiday House, 1994. ISBN 0823411346. $6.95. Ages 4-8.

I don’t like this book because I hate frogs. They’re slimy! I would change the title to Frog Prey! I won’t recommend this book to people who hate frogs! I learned frogs lay 100 eggs a day! I like one part that is hibernating because I would not have to deal with them!

Please Bury Me in the Library

Lewis, J. Patrick. Please Bury Me in the Library. Pictures by Kyle M. Stone. Harcourt, 2005. ISBN 0152163875. $16.00. Ages 4-8.

Please Bury Me in the Library is full of rhyming and free verse. This book is full of poems. I like the pictures in the book because they tell a lot about the poem such as “Three Haiku.” It looks so real because there’s a shadow that looks spooky! I didn’t like the free verse in the book because it didn’t sound right. I will recommend this book for a 2nd grader because it has some cool made-up words like "absolutastical." It tells a way to make a poem out of words and made-up words.

Gator Gumbo

Fleming, Candace. Gator Gumbo. Illustrated by Sally Anne Lambert. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004. ISBN 0374380503. $16.00. Ages 4-8.

We like this book because Gator is a trickster like Little Red Hen, Hansel and Gretel. Also, like in Stone Soup and the Gingerbread Man. Monsieur Gator is funny in the middle because he started to jump around. We like that the critters kept repeating words. We did not like that the critters teased Gator. We did not like when the critters threw stuff at Gator. We would change that Gator had a friend. We would change that the critters would not be eaten by Gator. We would recommend this book to 2nd grade and up because there are lots of words. We learned that we should not tease people. We learned not to be mean to others.

Guess Who Changes

Gordan, Sharon. Guess Who Changes. Benchmark Books, 2003. ISBN 0761415580. $21.36. Ages 4-8.

This book is good because it tells about a caterpillar’s changes. And it’s educational! We like the part when the butterfly spreads its wings. What we didn’t like was there was not enough information! She forgot to put in talking marks. We discovered a caterpillar’s life cycle. We recommend this book to people that like animals! This book is nonfiction. We learned caterpillars change into butterflies! We were disappointed because they didn’t tell what the butterfly’s NAME WAS!! We knew it was a monarch butterfly because of its look. And because our teacher told us!
